The purpose of this project, displayed in the annual Grains d'Isère Festival, was to display the potencies of wood and raw earth. A raw earth facade shows a progression in transparency, while a wood facade shows a progression in light. In between the two facades wooden frames are filled with different earth mixes creating different qualities of spaces to be explored by visitors.

The main concept, or “parti pris” of this project was to work closely with the site contours & with – not against – the forces of nature to generate a built environment conducive to thermal comfort & energy-efficiency. A continuous mass aligned with the contour lines, sitting subtly on the site with a gentle skyline outlining the slope of the site, creating a constant vertical dialogue between the underground & the skies.

The shopping mall revolves around a spine in an 8 shape allowing shoppers to explore the mall with some degree of flexibility while enriching their shopping experience. Designing in a beautiful coastal city such as Alexandria, one cannot ignore the impact of the view or dismiss the natural call of the city, thus we decided to plant a green spine originating from the seaside facade and paving its way thourought the interior paths of the mall.
